I’ve been writing quite a lot of satire and my articles that give actual advice sound pretty similar. Why take away something like this if it adds joy to your life?! After all, you might sweat for days on a story, and it still might not get published. But since I just saw writing as an activity to do casually, I know I will never do good at it at all. My brain often seems quite dead. The key is this: First, make sure your content is true and worth spreading, then second, learn how to spread it using the right stylistic strategies. As the old adage says, “kill your darlings.” This is a bleed-over from rule #2, but it deserves its own rule, because it’s important. Thanks! I’m sorry to say, the book was poorly written in terms of style — there were grammar and punctuation mistakes galore, shaky rhythm, odd verbiage, and other issues…because Frances Doss was not a writer by trade and was simply trying to tell the story her husband told her. We’re all going to die one day. Try articulating it, in writing, and put it somewhere so that you can remind yourself of it daily, as you write. Granted, that’s not an absolute (very few things are). Your writing could change someone’s life, by opening up new possibilities for them, by teaching them something new, or simply by giving them an experience that they wouldn’t otherwise have had.
