Writing is all about commitment – promising to yourself that you will finish a particular piece of writing, that you will revise a particular draft, that you will start sending work out to agents or to magazines. A writing class should help you develop skills – whether it’s learning to read ‘as a writer’ (analysing why something works or why a writer might have chosen to write something in a certain way) or whether it’s improving your skills as a writer of description, dialogue, or whatever you need. Whether I have a notebook handy or I use an app to capture something digitally, keeping track of quotes, books I’ve read, phrases and words I like, interesting concepts and ideas I have is worth the effort. For posts that rely on my own words more, I like to make notes on paper first, to get my head around the topic. Not well enough to find it again, at least. A student who does not have Internet skills cannot expect to do well with an online course. They should be able to offer advice and guidance beyond what works for them in their own practice as writers. Before I took this class I was very unconfident in my academic writing abilities; however, I have greatly improved them during this last semester. My writing has improved since I started Composition I and even from the time between the Preliminary Writing Assignment and the Reflection paper. Can writing really be taught, anyway? On the other hand, I’m trying to be open to reading more widely—more fiction, more varying nonfiction topics, more research papers—to help me add more knowledge to my reportoire. Rather, most people view “writing” as a process that evolves as we become capable of thinking in more abstract manners. For me, I find reading and researching a post are the most nefarious distractions. The truth is it’s hard, and it’s different for everyone – but being open to suggestions and trying new things makes it a lot easier to find what works for you. Something I’m keen to try this year is experimenting with long-form content and perhaps even an eBook or downloadable PDF. Learn these rules, and if you hate them, learn to love them. Because they are important to my work, it’s really difficult to protect myself against my own tendency to do these far longer than is necessary. The best training that I had before this class was an internship while I was preparing to separate from the Army. You need a place that’s going to respect what you’re doing and what you want to write. The benefit of having a facilitator, apart from getting an expert opinion each time, is that you’re also getting someone who’ll pick up on points made and draw them out if necessary, someone whose role it is to help everyone else articulate what they really mean about a particular piece while still ensuring that the writer and their work is being respected. Writing is not something you should do on your own, that is just a myth. I think everyone working in a creative field struggles against the inclination not to exercise their creative muscles. Recently we launched brand new Buffer for Business, with Google Analytics support, fan and follower growth options and more. We have a pretty good idea of what works best for us on the Buffer blog, but it’s always interesting to experiment with new content types as well. In the past six months that I’ve been a Content Crafter at Buffer, I’ve been writing a lot. They should write work of publishable quality and have some work published or about to be published. I also find this is a more efficient way for me to take in lots of information about a topic and process it, so the resulting post is higher quality than if I’d tried to take research straight from a blog post and use it before I fully understood it. The result has been an improvement in my writing and a better understanding of how I work best. I really never thought about continuing my education into college, but now that I have writing has become one of my main priorities.
